Ms. Callahan's Class
Week of: October 1, 2019
ELA -- In Unit 1, 2nd grade students are reading and learning about fiction and nonfiction text and their differences. They are learning to discover and locate text evidence within the story or passage in order to more accurately answer comprehension questions beginning with "Who, what, when, where, why, and how." Students have also been working on beginning to formulate and ask their own questions to others, beginning with those same question words. We have been using "clues/evidence" in our stories to determine how characters are feeling at different points in the story and how their feelings might change.
Reading -- Stories of the Week - "Families Work!" and "Working Together"
Grammar -- Putting capital letters at the beginning of sentences and putting proper punctuation at the ends of sentences. Identifying and using Subjects and Predicates to formulate and write complete sentences. Adding details to our own sentences we write to make our writing sound better and more fun to read!
Phonics -- "Short i" and "Long i" pattern words

Narrative Story Writing -
During this 1st trimester, 2nd grade is learning about the characteristics and qualities of Narrative Story Writing. Students have/will be choosing their own animal and Famous American to research and record important facts about their topic. They will be using books and research Internet sites on the 2nd Grade Symbal00, such as DK Find Out, Pebble Go, and Britannica School. Students are learning to organize their informational writing under important headings, using indentation and paragraph structure, and Google Drive to type up their nonfiction writing - including photographs with captions to support the writing topic.
Students continue to work to expand sentences to add details, organize ideas into paragraph form, demonstrate proper 2nd-grade spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, and end their story with a conclusion that makes sense to restate the purpose of informational research writing - to teach others about our topic!

Shapes & Fractions -
In Unit 7, the 2nd graders are learning how to identify 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes by their unique characteristics, such as number of sides, faces, and angles. Students are also learning how to read and write fractions, as well as learn how much of a whole a given fraction represents.
Addition and Subtraction -
2nd Graders have daily fact fluency and accuracy practice of basic addition & subtraction facts up to 20. Strategies taught to help "figure out" basic facts include: doubles, doubles +1, doubles +2, flip flop facts, counting on/up, counting back, making 10 to add, breaking apart numbers to add & subtract, and using fact family facts to add & subtract. Please practice + and - facts at home each week too, as the 2nd grade outcome and expectation is 38-40 facts completed correctly in 2 1/2 minutes by May.
Students should be accessing the fact fluency programs of X-Tra Math and Reflex Math at home as well as school. These can both be found on the 2nd Grade Symbaloo. The students know how to access this from the SEP webpage.

Earth Science - How and Why Earth Changes Over Time
In our final science unit for the year, the 2nd graders are learning about how the Earth we live on is continuously changing, as well as recognizing the fast and slow causes behind these changes taking place. The students will be experimenting to discover how we might be able to slow these changes to Earth's surface, while learning about factors of erosion and natural events.
